Kererū began as a study of one of Aotearoa’s most recognisable native birds, but became an exploration of colour, surface, and the quiet complexity held within familiar forms.
At a distance, the kererū appears wrapped in deep blue-green and bronze tones. Looking closer, the feathers reveal shifting layers of colour—greens, purples, browns, blues, and iridescent tones that seem to change with movement and light. The work reflects that sense of discovery: that what first appears simple or singular is often made up of many smaller, luminous parts.
Created through relief printmaking and layered colour experimentation, the series explores texture, observation, and the subtle magic held within native species we see every day.
