Where the Mountains Emerged is the first work within The Space They Carved for Us — an ongoing series exploring the worlds, landscapes, and pathways that became possible through the separation of Ranginui and Papatūānuku.

Layered through printmaking, translucent collage, graphite, and painted surface, the work reflects the formation of geography within the newly opened space between sky and earth. Mountain forms emerge through repeated structures and shifting atmospheric layers, suggesting land still in the process of becoming.

Rather than focusing on separation as rupture, the series considers it as an act of creation — a carving open of space for light, movement, growth, and life. The mountains become both physical landscape and symbolic memory: markers of the environments shaped for future generations to inhabit, move through, and belong within.

Through layering, obscuring, and revealing, Where the Mountains Emerged explores the relationship between whenua, memory, and transformation, tracing the beginnings of a world formed in the space between.
